Following Mamelodi Sundowns’ significant 1-0 CAF Champions League victory against Esperance, star striker Peter Shalulile emphasized the pivotal role of head coach Miguel Cardoso’s tactical blueprint.
Cardoso, who previously coached the Tunisian giants before taking charge of Sundowns, used his knowledge of the team to devise a winning strategy. Shalulile believes this inside information played a key role in their triumph.
“He (Cardoso) brought in a lot of experience because he is a good coach. He told us everything about Esperance since he coached them before, and it was all about belief and focus going into the game,” Shalulile told reporters after the match.

“We had to stick to the game plan he gave us, and that’s why we got the result.” Shalulile highlighting the team’s disciplined execution of Cardoso’s instructions as the foundation for their success.
With the return leg set to take place in Tunisia next week, the Namibian striker emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and executing the same strategy to secure a semifinal spot.
“Going to Tunisia, it’s the same approach – stick to the game plan, grind out a result, and make sure they don’t score. We will keep doing what we always do, which is work hard to get to the next round.”
Shalulile, who netted the only goal of the game, expressed his delight at being on the scoresheet once again and reaffirmed his hunger for success.
“As a striker, you always want to score – not to compete with others, but to challenge yourself. I take inspiration from players competing overseas, and it’s a great feeling to keep pushing myself,” he added.
“We will do our best to make sure we win the title.”
