Jose Riveiro has declined to speculate on his future with Orlando Pirates, as his current contract with the club nears its expiration at the end of the season.
The Spanish coach, who took charge of the Buccaneers in 2022, has made an immediate impact, leading the team to five major trophies, including three consecutive MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup victories. Additionally, he has guided the club to two runner-up finishes in the Premier Soccer League.
This season, Riveiro’s attention has been firmly on closing the gap between Orlando Pirates and the dominant Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as pushing the team further in the CAF Champions League, where they are currently in the semi-finals of the continental competition.
While Pirates supporters are hopeful that the highly regarded UEFA Pro Licence holder will extend his stay in South Africa, Riveiro has emphasized that his sole focus is on the current campaign and not what lies beyond. With his contract set for renewal, the coach remains tight-lipped about his future plans.
Riveiro explained his stance in an interview with IOL, saying: “We are facing the last stages of the season and it’s normal that when things come to an end, people want to know what’s going to happen in the future.
“And that’s probably something that we all would like to know about our lives. What’s going to happen in the future or not?
“I don’t want to know, I just want to live in the moment, the next training, the next game, the next opportunity to do what I like, to do what I love, which is to be the Orlando Pirates coach right now.
“Football is something that is totally unexpected and difficult to predict and to know where we are going to find ourselves in a space of one month, or four months, or six, or one year. So let’s rock for now.”
