Kaizer Chiefs will welcome Cape Town City to the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening in the Betway Premiership.
Chiefs enter the match riding the momentum of back-to-back victories in both league and cup competitions. They edged past Magesi FC with a 1-0 league win last Wednesday before securing a 3-1 triumph over Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals over the weekend.
However, their win against Stellies was not without controversy, particularly surrounding Pule Mmodi’s injury-time goal, which might have been scrutinized by VAR had the PSL implemented the technology. Despite this, Chiefs will be eager to build on their recent success following a difficult start to the season.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City find themselves in a rough patch, having gone eight matches without a win across league and cup competitions. Their most recent outing—a 1-1 home draw against TS Galaxy last Wednesday—at least ended a four-game losing streak in the Premiership.
With no fixture over the weekend due to their Nedbank Cup exit, the Citizens have had time for focused training sessions under coach Muhsin Ertugral as they aim to reverse their fortunes. Ahead of the clash, Ertugral has shared his thoughts on the team’s struggles.
“I’m very frustrated at the moment. I must be careful and get in line, because I don’t want to say something wrong. It’s always difficult after a game we dominate, especially in the first 30 minutes. The moment we scored, I asked my assistants – the coaches next to me – what we needed to do more.”
On not taking scoring chances, he added: “All these situations add up. I’m getting frustrated too, because these [concerns] are not coach-able. They’re not coaching issues – it’s just vision. And that’s what makes me ask: how can I coach that?”
Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has urged his charges to “think like a big club” and build on their weekend win over Stellies.
“It’s true that everyone is very happy, the supporters all across South Africa. But we need to think like a big club, this was a test and we need to concentrate on the next test to go all the way.”
