Jose Riveiro expecting tough encounter against Stellenbosch

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro expects a difficult game against Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night.

Riveiro has faced Stellies twice in Cape Town but has yet to secure a win, first drawing 1-1 in the 2022/23 season, ahead of a 1-0 defeat last term.

While Pirates are in second place on the Betway Premiership standings with 39 points from 17 games, Stellies are hot on their heels in third, with 31 points from 19 games.

Heading into this match, Bucs edged SuperSport United on penalties in a Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash as Stellenbosch went down 3-1 to Kaizer Chiefs.

Riveiro told his pre-match press conference: “Tough opponents again, another game away from home. We have a busy month on the road.

“I think during my term here [at Pirates], we haven’t managed to beat Stellenbosch in the league in Cape Town, we have beaten them once in the MTN8 [1-2 in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinals in September 2023].

“We know that they’re a difficult team to play against, excellent players and a really good coaching staff. We know it’s going to be a tough one physically and tactically but we will try to be at our best one more time.”
