Marumo Gallants through to Nedbank Cup semi-finals

Marumo Gallants secured their place in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a 4-1 penalty shootout win over Durban City.

The two sides could not be separated after extra time but the Betway Premiership emerged the winners with Masindi Nemtajela, Gabadinho Mhango, Sekela Sithole and Edgar Manaka all netting their kicks.

For the Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Joslin Kamatuka scored his penalty, but both Saziso Magawana and Athini Jodwana were unsuccessful from the spot.

Galllants will now play one of Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns/Sekhukhune United in the last four.

The Premiership team had started the tie well with Junior Zindoga first with a chance as he danced through the City defence before firing a shot at goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali.

Mtshali then had to be alert to deny a lively Zindoga just minutes later, but despite a few half chances for both sides, the was little in the way of goal-mouth action for the remainder of the first period.

It continued to be an evenly contested match after the break, while Siyavuya Ndlovu had a good chance to give City the lead with a header on 72 minutes that sailed just inches over the crossbar.

Samkelo Maseko’s long-range shot from outside the box, with the match winding down, was just wide.

City may have won the game with just seconds of normal time to play, but the referee waved play on after Maseko was upended in the box by Mpho Chabatsane.

Rivaldo Prins thought he had won it for Gallants with an extra-time shot that hit the woodwork, before his team eventually claimed the win via the lottery of penalties.
