Steve Barker furious as Stellenbosch knocked out of Nedbank Cup

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker was frustrated with how his team was knocked out of the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Inacio Miguel opened the scoring for Amakhosi at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium from a 20th minute penalty.

Andre de Jong netted an 86th minute equaliser but Pule Mmodi restored Amakhosi’s lead five minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game after the ball was swung in from a corner.

Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens appeared to have been nudged off the ball in the lead up to the goal and while the foul was originally given, the decision was overturned, before Mfundo Vilakazi sealed a 3-1 win when he hit the target six minutes later, with Stellies chasing the game.

Speaking after the encounter, Barker said on SuperSport: “I’m not going to talk about the game. Two years ago in the MTN8 quarter-final we get a penalty in the 96th minute against Chiefs, at Danie Craven, and it gets overturned.

“We play in the final against Pirates, they get a free-kick 5 meters in advance, it gets given.

“Today, the linesman puts his flag up for a foul on our goalkeeper, we can clearly see it was, it gets overturned.

“So what can I say? Thank you.”
