Kaizer Chiefs’ Inacio Miguel proclaims the Soweto Derby as Africa’s biggest rivalry

Kaizer Chiefs defender Inácio Miquel has described the Soweto Derby as the greatest football rivalry in Africa.

Miguel made his debut in the highly anticipated clash against Orlando Pirates last Saturday.

The Angolan international started in defence alongside Rushwin Dortley, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, and Njabulo Blom, as Chiefs looked to keep the Buccaneers at bay.

However, their efforts were undone by a penalty in the last moments of the game, which Patrick Maswanganyi converted, handing Pirates a 1-0 victory at FNB Stadium.

Despite the disappointing result, Miguel was in awe of the electrifying atmosphere that came with the occasion.

“It was my first Soweto Derby, and of course, emotions were everywhere. It was an amazing day for me to feel the real African derby. For me, it is the biggest derby on the continent,” said Miguel.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t win. But as it was my first derby, I was excited and tried to give my best to help the team.”

He admitted that he experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, from excitement at kickoff to disappointment at the final whistle.

With the defeat now behind them, Miguel and his Chiefs teammates will shift focus to their next league match, as they prepare to host AmaZulu on Tuesday.
