Betway Prem Wrap: Mixed bag of results for Sowetan giants

In the midweek installment of the Betway Premiership, the Sowetan giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, experienced a mixed bag of results, as Sekhukhune United narrowed the gap at the top of the table.

Darwin Gonzalez nets winner as Cape Town City edge Orlando Pirates

Darwin Gonzalez proved to be the hero for Cape Town City for the second time in four days after his goal proved to be the winner in a 1-0 win against Pirates.

Despite being dominated by Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal from Gonzalez. Pirates squandered numerous scoring opportunities, including a missed penalty by Maswanganyi. City goalkeeper Darren Keet made crucial saves, and the home side’s defense, particularly Fasika and Gordinho, was resolute. The win marks consecutive victories for City under new coach Ertugral, while the loss sets back Pirates in the league title race.

Wandile Duba bags brace as Kaizer Chiefs down Stellenbosch

Kaizer Chiefs recorded a much-needed 2-1 win over Stellenbosch on Wednesday evening with Wandile Duba netting both goals. Chiefs started well with Bradley Cross wasting a good chance to give the home side an early lead with a shot he fired over the target after picking up a good pass from Mduduzi Shabalala. Devin Titus then broke forward at the other end but could only find the side-netting. Stellies had opened the scoring at the FNB Stadium after 20 minutes through Khomotjo Lekholoane but Duba restored parity with his first goal on 28 minutes. The academy graduate would go on to score another in the second half as Amakhosi celebrates 55 years with win on home soil. The result lifts Chiefs to fifth in the league standings, while Stellenbosch drops to seventh.

Sekhukhune United consolidate top four position after beating AmaZulu

Boyeli scored just before halftime, and Mntambo added a second goal in stoppage time.
