CR Belouizdad defeated Al Ahly 1-0 in their CAF Champions League group stage match at the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers on Friday night with a late goal.
Former Cape Town City striker, Khanyisa Mayo, started for the Algerian side, while fellow South African Percy Tau began on the bench for Al Ahly, only making an appearance during stoppage time.
A win would have secured Al Ahly’s place in the knockout rounds with two matches remaining. Despite some early chances for the Egyptian team, the tide was turned in the second half as Belouizdad gained control and created more opportunities.
Despite Belouizdad’s dominance, they couldn’t capitalize until the 90th minute when Naoufel Khacef scored from close range. This late goal secured the victory for CR Belouizdad and keeps them in contention for the knockout stages.
Al Ahly remains at the top of Group C with seven points, while Belouizdad rises to second with six points, one point ahead of Orlando Pirates, who play bottom-placed Stade D’Abidjan later today.
