Papi Zothwane faces a tough test in his first task as interim Magesi boss against a free-scoring Orlando Pirates on Sunday.
Clinton Larsen stepped down from his post as head coach following the recent Carling Black Label Cup loss to an All Stars team coached by Bucs boss Jose Riveiro.
While Owen Da Gama has been touted as a permanent replacement for Larsen, Zothwane will take the reins until the new year at least, with assistant Jacky Ledwaba.
Magesi secured promotion this season and proved their worth in the Carling Knockout Cup as they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, but they are also bottom of the Betway Premiership standings with just one win from their opening nine games.
The Buccaneers are, meanwhile, in second place with eight wins.
While Magesi last lost 1-0 to SuperSport United in the league, Pirates thrashed Marumo Gallants 8-1.
Riveiro’s side have a busy schedule ahead of them as they bid to challenge perennial league winners Sundowns for the title, with three points currently separating the two sides at the top of the standings.
Speaking ahead of the tie, Riveiro said on Times Live that they are taking one game at a time.
He explained: “People have a right to speak about who is going to win the league, but we are not thinking about that. We are only thinking about what is coming next week against Magesi FC.
“We are thinking about how many points we can collect in January to continue with our objectives in the league and in the Champions League. We try to establish short-term goals and not be distracted by what is going to happen in four or five months.
“If you do that [think too far ahead], you can forget what it takes to achieve your objectives at the end of the season.”
