Two Betway Premiership fixtures scheduled to take place at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend have been moved following substantial damage to the pitch.
Makhadzi’s One Woman Show was held at the venue last Saturday, and despite precautions taken to mitigate any damage to the playing surface, an assessment was scarcely needed to confirm that the pitch was unplayable in its current state.
Sekhukhune United’s league clash with Marumo Gallants on Saturday as well as Magesi’s meeting with Orlando Pirates on Sunday will now take place at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Polokwane municipality mayor John Mpe explained that the pitch needs significant attention after sustaining serious damage.
He told IOL: “The stadium will be unable to accommodate any fixtures this weekend and throughout January 2025.
“While we celebrate the positive impact of such events, we acknowledge the damage caused to the pitch and sincerely apologize to PSL clubs, soccer fans, and all stakeholders for the inconvenience caused.
“The stadium’s pitch comprises winter ryegrass, a premium turf that requires meticulous care and maintenance, making it particularly vulnerable to damage when proper precautions are not observed.
“The municipality is committed to restoring the stadium to world-class standards and ensuring its continued use as a premier sporting and events venue.”
