Setjhaba Mofokeng, aged 19, came to Pirates from Brits Soccer Academy in North West Province in 2022, initially playing for their U19 teams.
Last season, he showcased his skills in the DStv Diski Challenge before securing a loan move to ABC Motsepe League side Wits FC for the current campaign.
In a statement released on Friday, Orlando Pirates expressed their grief, saying, “Orlando Pirates Football Club are deeply saddened by the passing of Setjhaba Mofokeng.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
Mofokeng was remembered by his clubs as a promising left-back who had just started to make his mark in the football world.
“Setjhaba, who were on loan at Wits at the time of his passing, were part of our 2023/24 DDC team,” the club added, concluding with a tribute, “Rest in peace, Setjhaba.”
