Monday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers saw thrilling action as Algeria, Cameroon, and Gambia all secured important victories in their respective matches
Here’s a round-up of the day’s key fixtures:
Algeria book ticket to Morocco 2025
Algeria became the latest team to secure a place at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco with a narrow 1-0 victory over Togo in Lome. The decisive goal came early in the first half via a Ramy Bensebaini penalty, securing Algeria’s fourth consecutive win in Group E. The win puts Algeria on 12 points, with just two matches remaining, making it impossible for any other team, except Equatorial Guinea, to challenge their position.
This will be Algeria’s seventh consecutive AFCON appearance and their 21st overall. With two AFCON titles already under their belt, both won on North African soil in 1990 and 2019, Algeria will be eyeing a third title in Morocco next year. The Desert Foxes’ defensive solidity and tactical discipline have been central to their unbeaten campaign so far.
Cameroon edge Kenya to stay top of Group J
Cameroon solidified their top spot in Group J with a 1-0 win over Kenya at the Mandela National Stadium. Boris Enow’s stunning free-kick in the 63rd minute made the difference, keeping the Indomitable Lions unbeaten with 10 points from four games.
Despite a spirited effort from Kenya, including several close attempts from striker Michael Olunga, Cameroon’s defence stood firm. Kenya’s hopes of qualification now hang by a thread as they sit third with four points, while Cameroon inches closer to securing their place in Morocco.
Barrow inspires Gambia to crucial win over Madagascar
Gambia kept their AFCON dreams alive with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Madagascar in El Jadida. Musa Barrow’s 62nd-minute strike lifted the Scorpions to second place in Group A, just one point behind leaders Tunisia. Barrow capitalized on a rebound after an initial save to score, sending Gambian fans into celebration.
Gambia’s resilience was on full display, despite missing a first-half penalty. With this victory, Gambia now have five points, putting them in a strong position to challenge for a spot in Morocco.
Other Results: Zimbabwe dominate Namibia
Elsewhere, Zimbabwe secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Namibia to climb to second place in Group J, while Mozambique thrashed Eswatini 3-0 in Nelspruit.
Equatorial Guinea also claimed a crucial 2-1 win against Liberia, keeping their qualification hopes alive.
