Jabu Jeremiah Mahlangu, born as Jabu Jeremiah Pule on July 11, 1980, is a retired South African footballer. He began his PSL career with Kaizer Chiefs, where he played from 1999 to 2004, scoring 27 goals in 99 appearances. Despite his talent, his time at Chiefs was cut short due to unprofessional conduct.
Mahlangu’s career took him to SV Mattersburg in Austria, where he was coached by ex-Chiefs boss Muhsin Ertugral. Ertugral praised Mahlangu’s exceptional talent saying, “I have coached all over the world and in three continents. He is one of the most talented players I have ever come across or worked with. He could unlock any defence at any given time,” as quoted by Sowetan. However, Mahlangu’s stay in Austria was brief, as he was dismissed from the club after a drunk driving incident.
Upon returning to South Africa, Mahlangu faced further setbacks. He was released by SuperSport United in 2005 for missing training sessions and subsequently signed by Orlando Pirates, changing his surname to Mahlangu.
In 2008, Mahlangu left South Africa for trials with Swedish clubs, eventually signing with Östers IF. During his time at Östers IF, he displayed improved behavior and helped the team narrowly miss promotion to Superettan. Mahlangu’s career concluded in South Africa, with stints at FC Cape Town and SuperSport United.
Throughout his career, Mahlangu represented the South African national team, making 20 appearances from 2000 to 2004. He was a member of the South African team that famously defeated Brazil at the 2000 Olympic Games and also participated in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
