Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos targets maximum points from Congo qualifiers

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos wants maximum points from his side’s two upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with Congo.

Two wins would secure South Africa’s place at the tournament finals that take place in Morocco next year.

After an impressive showing at the most recent AFCON, where Broos side ended in third place, Bafana have struggled in their most recent qualifiers where they needed a late goal to draw 2-2 with Uganda and another late goal to overcome South Sudan 3-2.

Bafana host Congo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday before travelling to the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville for Tuesday’s return clash.

Ahead of the weekend’s game, Broos said in the Sowetan: “We have to prepare the team very well so that we have six points from these two games.

“I want to avoid a stressful month of November.

“If we have six on six, we are qualified. If we don’t, then maybe the two games against South Sudan and Uganda can be tricky.”

Broos added: “We didn’t see the real SA in our last two games.

“I wasn’t happy with the performance but I was only happy with the results.

“Remember three years ago, the last [World Cup qualifier] game in Ghana, we had enough with one point but we lost [1-0 to Ghana to finish second behind them and even when the teams were tied on 13 points, Ghana edged SA on goal difference]. So, let’s avoid that situation.

“If we have to go to the last game away to Uganda that we have to play there not to lose, it’s a tricky situation. I want the six on six.”
