COSAFA Cup Returns to South Africa with Exciting Format

The 2024 COSAFA Cup kicks off in South Africa from June 26th to July 7th, following last year’s successful format. A live draw on Friday at 11:00 AM (CAT) will split 12 teams into three groups, with winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semifinals.

Hosts South Africa, defending champions Zambia, and Angola (highest ranked after Zambia) are the seeded teams. Madagascar and Mauritius will not participate this year.

This tournament provides valuable playing time for teams and coaches leading into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Each team plays a minimum of three games, with most pool games having an extra rest day for player well-being.

With 22 editions filled with memorable matches, only five nations have claimed the COSAFA Cup. Zambia holds the most titles (7), followed by Zimbabwe (6), South Africa (5), Angola (3), and Namibia (1).

Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, and Lesotho have all been runners-up twice, while Senegal (guest nation) reached the finals once, losing to South Africa in 2021.
