Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi feels Video assistant referees (VAR) should be introduced after the controversial penalty shoot-out in Sundays MTN8 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.
Masandawana reached the semi-finals after the sides were tied 2-2 in extra-time and the match went to a penalty shoot-out which Downs won 2-1.
During the shoot-out, the fourth penalty by Lyle Lakay was adjudged to have been saved by Itumeleng Khune but replays suggest the ball had in fact crossed the goal-line.
After the game, Downs coach Mngqithi called for the use of VAR to help in the process of ruling out poor decisions made during matches.
“The need for VAR is there,” Mngqithi said. “It makes a bit of a difference, but at times they even make mistakes with the aid of VAR.
“In this case, Zakhele was just there, so what is the use of bringing the linesman into that area when he’s not going to be able to tell the referee that it’s a goal.
“The linesman was five metres away from the situation, unlike when he is usually on the touchline, but it still went on [got a decision wrong].
“It’s one of those situations, and I do not want to speak about them because I also believe we had a penalty goal on that side in the second half.
“But again, we have to accept that everybody makes mistakes. We also make mistakes.
“But on the penalty one, it’s a bit of a sore point when our analyst receives a red card, when they look at it they will realise that they had made a mistake and these people were not shouting at us for nothing.
“But that’s football. Let’s not dwell too much on it,” he added.
