Igesund Set to Stay Until 2014

Gordon Igesund says as far as he knows he is keeping the Bafana Bafana head coach position until at least 2014

A new South African Football Association leadership is expected to take over on September 28 after the elective congress with Danny Jordaan seemingly the favourite.

However, in Igesund’s mind, a new leadership doesn’t necessarily mean there would be changes in Bafana’s technical team.

“I’ve got a contract until 2014.

I had a mandate to get us to the AFCON 2013 semi-finals and I didn’t do that.

I thought we were unlucky to lose on penalties to Mali in the quarter-finals,” he reckons.

“I also needed to get us to the 2014 World Cup and I won three out of four games so whatever anybody wants to do they are entitled to do that.

I know that after the AFCON I was told by SAFA that they are very, very happy with the way things are going and I should continue until 2014.

So the way I see things and the way things are, there are no mandates anymore.

I’m here until 2014 until something else happens.

That’s where we are,” he said.

Igesund concludes: “I’ve got no control of what people say or do… If someone calls tomorrow and say we want to talk to you (about the job), so be it.

At least I can say to myself I’ve done what I had to do to the best of my ability.”
