The 2015-16 English Premier League season is right around the corner and it’s time to start looking ahead at how yet another year of glorious English football will play out. The Premier League has an arsenal of gifted scorers and this year’s Golden Boot race should be a good one. With several talented new entries and former winners going head-to-head, punters will have a deep pool of players from which to choose.
Sergio Aguero (3/1)
Last season’s top scorer is favourite to win the golden boot
again in the coming campaign. Sergio Aguero is the man who will be gunning to
fire the Citizens back to the title. In a team, that has David Silva, Yaya
Toure and Raheem Sterling as creative talents, expect him to be even more
deadly next season. A big concern is that the Argentine may be fatigued from
the Copa America and – not forgetting his history with injuries.
Diego Costa (11/2)
Diego Costa is another star man who needs to keep his injury
record in check if he wants to become the Premier League’s top goalscorer in
this upcoming campaign. After a terrific start to the season, with seven goals
in his first four games, Costa looked to be the world-class striker Chelsea had
been waiting for. He continued to be terrific until he got injured, just like
Aguero, and Costa’s troubles continued until the end of the season. With
Mourinho describing him as “fragile.” Despite these consistent problems, the
striker must be looking forward to the new season with a sense of optimism and
confidence. He comes into his second season of the Premier League as a
champion, with the best squad in the land, which can only improve his
confidence.
Harry Kane (12/1)
Harry Kane, was a name we knew barely anything about when
2014/15 began. But by the end of the season we were growing almost tired of
hearing his name on the score sheet (unless you’re a Spurs fan, of course). But
there is something in what the multitude of commentators said which cannot be
denied: he is a truly remarkable talent. He scored 31 goals, in all
competitions by the end of last season – more than any of his Premier League
contemporaries, and his campaign only really got started in November. His rise
to prominence was absolutely phenomenal. But some doubts remain about the young
London-born striker. Many believe Kane’s goalscoring form was nothing more than
a one-season wonder and he’ll need to prove himself again this season.
Wayne Rooney (12/1)
This campaign could be one of Wayne Rooney’s most important
yet, because Manchester United are going to be charging for the title, for the
first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. With the signing of Morgan
Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Rooney will now be able to move to
where he is most effective, up front. People often forget that Rooney is a
history-making Premier League scorer, and you can never truly rule out Rooney
from any goal scoring market. And with United, now bustling with creative
talent, and a manager who gets the very best out of his players, don’t be
shocked if Rooney takes the league by storm this season.
Christian Benteke (16/1)
Liverpool’s marquee signing, Christian Benteke is a strong
contender this year. With Daniel Sturridge seemingly chronically injured the
Belgian figures to be the Reds’ main source of goals. The only concern would be
whether Benteke will fit into Brendon Rodgers’ Liverpool system. We saw last
year when Mario Balotelli was into the Reds’ front line, the Italian struggled.
However, Benteke is a proven goalscorer in the Premiker League and he should
bang in the goals this season.
Alexis Sanchez (20/1)
Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez settled into his new environment
and scored 16 goals in 25 Premier League appearances and 25 from 52 in all
competitions for the Gunners. Sanchez is not an out-and-out striker as he
usually plays on the wing, but his very deadly in front of goal. He didn’t
score too much in the Copa America but he’s a different beast in the Premier
League.
Eden Hazard (20/1)
Eden Hazard tore apart the Premiership during the 2014/15
season, scoring 14 goals and winning Football of the Year whilst doing so.
Hazard brings the magic that can win matches in one action and has the flair
and artist’s touch of the football. He’s been compared to the likes of Lionel
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but if Hazard wants to be the best he’ll need to
be more prolific in front of goal. Hazard will once again be the driving force
behind any success that Chelsea are to have this season and this time he’ll
need to score more goals.
Olivier Giroud (25/1)
Olivier Giroud seems at first glance like a good option as
Arsenal’s first-choice striker but in three seasons in the Premier League, his
best finish was just 6th, which he achieved last season. His team-mate Theo
Walcott has had each of the last two seasons disrupted by injury, but he is now
fitter, stronger and perhaps he will be a regular starter.
Memphis Depay (25/1)
Memphis Depay signed for Manchester United in June, having
top scored for Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven last time out. He is untested in
the Premier League, but the Dutch striker seems to have a natural goalscoring
ability.
Prediction
We think the top scorer will come from either Rooney, Costa
or Aguero.
