Ngcongca Makes Move to Ligue 1 Newcomers Troyes
Anele Ngcongca has completed his move to French Ligue 1 side
Troyes.TheBafana
Bafana defender was with Belgian club Racking Genk after nine years. In all,
Ngcongca made 271 appearances for Genk, scoring eight goals. The 27-year-old
right-back excited about plying his trade in Ligue 1 and has spoken about what
lead to his departure at Genk: “The club now has a new coach [Peter Maes] and
two new directors. Things started to change during a training session. I was
kicked on my ankle and had to be attended by a physio. The coach told me to get
up and I told him I can’t because I was injured. Our coach is someone who
shouts a lot, he was given the job because he is very strict and someone who
demands discipline. He doesn’t like someone who makes mistakes. After the
session I told him I can’t play in our following match because of my ankle and
that is when it was reported that I went AWOL. How can I go AWOL when my place is
20 minutes from the training ground? After that I was called into a meeting and
I was fined R50 000 and I left the meeting immediately. The next time the coach
saw me, he asked what happened and I told him I was upset because he didn’t
give me the respect I deserved. But anyway, life goes on.”
Bafana Bafana pair
Thulani Serero and Tsepo Masilela are doubtful for Saturday’s 2017 Africa Cup
of Nations qualifier with Mauritania in Nouakchott. Ajax Amsterdam attacker
Serero and Kaizer Chiefs left-back Masilela are nursing knocks, but were
expected to report to the Bafana camp on Tuesday for a medical assessment. Bidvest
Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has already been ruled out of the Group M tie
with a thigh strain, with SuperSport United’s Clayton Daniels taking his place.
Glenn Verbauwhede has
been registered by Mamelodi Sundowns on deadline day for the 2015/2016 season. The
Belgian goalkeeper was seen at the PSL head offices as the curtain came down on
the South African transfer window at 17h00 on Monday. Verbauwhede, who spent
last season on loan at Free State Stars, has been added to Pitso Mosimane’s
playing options although he has a tendon tear that will likely keep him out
until January. Striker Katlego Mashego will also remain with the
Chloorkop-based side after a prospective move to Bidvest Wits failed to
materialise. “Katlego Mashego is staying with Sundowns and there is
nothing on Siphelele Ntshangase as well,” said PSL media relations officer
Luxolo September.
The Premier Soccer
League has offered some insight into Camaldine Abraw’s registration as a Kaizer
Chiefs player. The Togolese forward was registered by the defending Absa
Premiership champions on deadline day despite an ongoing case involving
Amakhosi and Bloemfontein Celtic, after the striker signed contracts with both
clubs. PSL General Manager Derek Blanckensee addressed the media shortly after
the local transfer window closed at 5pm on Monday. “There was an
application from Bloemfontein Celtic seeking an order from the PSL DRC, ordering
the player to go to Celtic on the basis of a pre-contract and that application
was turned down,” he explains.
“Kazier Chiefs submitted a set of registration documents which are
complying so he’s registered for Kaizer Chiefs.” Blanckensee was quick to
point out the case is far from being over. “As things stand, Abraw has
been registered by Kaizer Chiefs but he DRC does instruct us to inspect some
aspects of the whole thing so we don’t know how that will turn out in the end.
The book is not necessarily closed on this chapter. We’ll see how it ends
up.”
Bloemfontein Celtic
say they are shocked by the Premier Soccer League’s decision to allow Kaizer
Chiefs to register Camaldine Abraw before his case is over. The Togolese
striker is registered by Chiefs and eligible to play despite a pending case of
him allegedly signing two contracts with the two clubs, and Celtic are very
unhappy to say the least. The club’s chairman Max Tshabalala has released a
statement in which he says the League has acted unprofessionally on the matter
after the PSL’s general manager for football Derek Blanckensee told the media
on Monday that the player is eligible to play for Chiefs.
Tokelo Rantie is set for a return to the English Championship
with Reading hoping to take the Bafana Bafana striker on loan from Bournemouth.Rantie has not featured at all in the Premier League match day
squads this season for The Cherries, making a substitute appearance in the
League Cup only. And with Bournemouth expected to sign Glenn Murray from
Crystal Palace on Tuesday, he will move further down the pecking order on the
English south coast. Reading want Rantie on loan, making him the second South
African to play for the club in recent seasons after an ill-fated move for
Bongani Khumalo in the 2011/12 campaign where he played just a handful of
matches. Rantie made just 12 league appearances for Bournemouth last season as
they won a first ever promotion to the top-flight in England, with all of those
coming from the bench.
Dominic Isaacs says the ambition of
Royal Eagles’ chairman is what lured him to the club. The former
Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic defender has dropped down a division
after Ajax Cape Town decided against renewing his contract. However, the
33-year-old says the opportunity was too good to pass up. “This is a fantastic
opportunity for to add some value to the club,” says Isaacs, who has
signed a two-year deal. “After meeting with the chairman, I can sense that
Eagles have big ambitions for the future. That is exactly why I did not hesitate
to join the club. I’m very excited about the club’s future.”
Chippa United have finally completed the signing of Burkina
Faso striker Aristide Bance on a three-year deal. Following Edward
Manqele’s move to Kaizer Chiefs, club chairman Chippa Mpengesi has exclusively
revealed that he has secured the services of Bance. “We have signed
Aristide Bance and he is the straight replacement for Edward Manqele at the club,”
Mpengesi said. Meanwhile, Mpengesi says that he is not interested in signing
David Zulu as part of the Manqele deal, adding that it was an outright deal
between the two clubs and not a swap deal. “It is not a swap deal; it is
straight deal and Kaizer Chiefs paid a transfer fee for [Manqele]. I was not
interested in a loan deal for Zulu. He still needs to fight for his place at
Chiefs. You can’t sell the player and the next thing you want him back, you
know what I mean? So it would mean I was not selling him with an open heart and
it will not be good for him coming [back] to us. There was no such thing as a
swap deal,” Mpengesi concluded. The Port Elizabeth outfit have also
confirmed the signing of 21-year-old striker Muhammad Zaid Patel from Bidvest
Wits.
Bafana Bafana are set
to face Africa’s fifth best side Senegal in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on
September 8, SAFA confirmed on Monday. The match will be played at the
Orlando Stadium with kick-off set for 19:00. Bafana Bafana won the 2014 edition
of the Nelson Mandela Challenge after seeing off Ivory Coast 2-0 in Durban
courtesy of goals from Bongani Zungu and David Zulu. Senegal are ranked fifth
in Africa and 39th in the world compared to South Africa, who are ranked 17th
in Africa and 72nd in the world. Local fans may be able to get a glimpse of
Senegal and Premier League star Sadio Mane. The attacking forward from
Southampton has been strongly linked with a move to English giants Manchester
United. The friendly international comes shortly after the national team’s
AFCON 2017 qualifier against Mauritania in Nouakchott, Mauritania on September
5.

University of
Pretoria have re-signed Siyabonga Ngubane on loan from Mpumalanga Black Aces. Ngubane
has returned to the Tshwane club on a season-long loan from Aces after signing
for AmaZayoni following the expiry of his Tuks contract at the end of last
season.
Ajax Cape Town have
completed the signing of Abel Mabaso on a loan deal from Mamelodi Sundowns. The
Urban Warriors were set to announce one final arrival at Ikamva in the form of
Mabaso, who has now been registered at the PSL offices. “Abel’s enthusiasm and
professionalism will without a doubt have a positive impact on the team, and
joining the likes of SA U23 players Abbubaker Mobara and Bafana Bafana defender
Rivaldo Coetzee in defence will boost our defensive options,” Ajax Cape Town
CEO Ari Efstathiou told the club’s website. The 24-year-old had loan spells
with Mpumalanga Black Aces in the 2013/14 season and Maritzburg United in the
2014/15 season.
Cape Town All Stars
rising star Mihlali Mayambela has jetted out of the country for a week-long
assessment at Djurgardens IF. The younger brother of Mark Mayambela missed
All Stars’ 1-0 win over Royal Eagles in the First Division on Saturday, which
took Igugu Lekapa to the top of the fledgling NFD standings. His older brother
Mark, who is now at Chippa United, also played for Djurgardens before returning
to the country last January when he signed for Eagles.
Maritzburg United
have secured the signing Mamelodi Sundowns defender Kwanda Mngonyama on a
season-long loan. Bidvest Wits appeared ready to hijack the deal on Monday
but the Team of Choice have finally landed their man after protracted talks
with his parent club. “We couldn’t reach an agreement over a [permanent]
transfer but the player has joined us on loan,” Maritzburg operations manager
Quinton Jettoo said. Mngonyama will spend the 2015/16 season with Mandla
Ncikazi’s side as they look to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish.
Ugandan midfielder Yasser Mugerwa’s transfer to Orlando
Pirates has now been confirmed and completed. Mugerwa has signed a
three-year deal with the Buccaneers after Pirates agreed terms with Uganda
Revenue Authority last week.
Mamelodi Sundowns
have registered Amajita captain Motjeka Madisha for the 2015/16 season. The
20-year-old centre-back is expected to bolster the defence following Alje
Schut’s departure.
Mamelodi Sundowns are close to concluding a
deal with Colombian striker Leonardo Castro. A source at Sundowns says that
the deal will be finalised after the 26-year-old impressed the head coach,
Pitso Mosimane. Castro is set to sign a three-year contract with the
Brazilians.
Free State Stars have fired their head coach Kinnah Phiri and
replaced him with Ernst Middendorp. Phiri got the axe after three
losses in their first three league matches. Middendorp, an ex-Kaizer Chiefs and
Bloemfontein Celtic boss, was formerly on the books of Chippa United last
season. The German left the Chilli Boys on bad terms after he was suspended in
March following a poor run of results at the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.
Bloemfontein Celtic
chairman Max Tshabalala was delighted the Free State Cheetahs rugby team showed
their support for Phunya Sele Sele against Orlando Pirates. Cheetahs players
and officials attended the league match at Free State Stadium as Celtic won 1-0
thanks to Vuyani Ntanga’s 76th minute goal last week Wednesday. Tshabalala told
his club’s website: “Winning against Pirates has obviously made us proud but
the victory was sweeter when we witnessed such extraordinary support from the
Cheetahs family. We were overwhelmed by the jubilation and how players from
both teams wildly celebrated with such passion. We have the integrity of the
province to protect. The bond between these two institutions resembles that of
‘Ubuntu’, the reception by our supporters towards Cheetahs was amazing… it was
a phenomenal atmosphere that was fulfilling. Once again [thanks] to the
management of the Cheetahs for the support.”
Banyana Banyana head
coach Vera Pauw says it is unfortunate that Egypt have withdrawn from the All
Africa Games, taking place in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo from September 3 to
18. It is unclear why the North Africans have pulled out of the event. “It
is very unfortunate that they had to withdraw from the competition but that is
beyond our control. However, from our standpoint, nothing changes. We would
have loved to play against them because, as I have been saying, this is ideal
preparation for our 2016 Rio Olympic qualifiers against Equatorial Guinea next
month,” said Pauw. “The withdrawal means we will now play one match less
meaning there is no room for error as there are only two matches to play
instead of the initial three. The withdrawal also denies us a chance to face
them for the first time. The only positive here is that should we move into the
semi-finals, we will have more rest, which means fresh legs for that part of
the tournament.” Banyana had been drawn in Group B alongside Cameroon, Ghana
and Egypt. Group A remains with four teams – hosts Congo alongside Nigeria,
Tanzania and Ivory Coast. Banyana will face Cameroon in their opening match on
September 7 at the Stade de l’unite 3. Kick-off is at 17h00 local time in
Brazzaville (18h00 SA time). Pauw’s charges will then lock horns with Ghana in
their second and last group stages encounter on September 10. The clash will
start at the same time at the same venue. The semi-finals take place five days
later, with the finals set for September 18. Banyana depart for Brazzaville on
Wednesday as part of Team South Africa under SASCOC.
Frustration and
broken promises over an adjustment to his contract at the club is believed to be
the reason behind Ayanda Patosi missing training with Belgian side Lokeren last
week. Reports in Belgium surfaced that the player had gone AWOL, but a
friend of the player who asked not to be named said this is not the case,
adding the club knows exactly what his situation is. “Ayanda is not AWOL, the
club know where he is and have had contact with him,” the friend said. “The
issue that has upset Ayanda is that for weeks the club have said they will
adjust his contract, yet they are doing nothing about it. He has had enough of
the situation and he wants it rectified.” Patosi moved from the ASD Academy in
Cape Town to Lokeren in 2011, signing a five-year contract and starting on very
close to the minimum wage applicable to footballers in Belgium. He has signed
one contract improvement since then, but is still well behind level he should
be at for a player of his importance to the team. After weeks of being given
assurances the situation would be remedied, in frustration he has now decided
as a last resort to stay away from training. “What really makes him feel
devalued at Lokeren is that the club is consistently putting a ridiculous
transfer price on his head, yet he earns 50 percent of what he could earn if he
was playing in South Africa! He has communicated this to the club on a number
of occasions but despite their assurance that they will rectify the situation,
they continue to ignore the situation,” added his friend. Patosi’s situation is
further complicated by the fact that the ASD Academy still owns 50 percent of
his transfer rights. That has meant that Lokeren, in an attempt to maximise
their return, have put a high price on his transfer fee, scaring off potential
suitors. At this stage, Lokeren would prefer to keep the player because after
getting just 50 percent of his real market value, would struggle to replace him
with the proceeds. The friend added: “The situation has completely
disadvantaged Patosi and he feels trapped. When they did improve his contract a
few years ago, they added another year to the length of the contract, so the
situation is never-ending. So now he is fighting back; he feels that if he is
going to be tied up by issues beyond his control, then he should at the very
least be paid according to his level of ability and the market rate.”
Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo
Sono says he doesn’t scout keepers, he only scores against them, but he is
delighted with what Sherwyn Naicker has brought to the club. Naicker kept
his third consecutive clean-sheet in the draw at SuperSport United, including a
brilliant last-minute save to deny Jeremy Brockie. He started his career at
SuperSport, and ‘Bra J’ says he is happy the goalkeeper made his way to Cosmos.
“I told him that they [SuperSport] kicked him out and he must go and prove them
wrong,” Sono says. “I am not good at scouting goalkeepers, I was only good at
scoring against them. You know how I got the boy? We met when I was going to
training. He stopped me and said ‘Bra J, I want to come and train with your
team’. I looked at him and said ‘Yerr, an Indian goalkeeper … the last Indian
goalkeeper was Deshi Baktawer’. He said ‘give me chance’ and I said he must
come. When we got to training to my players mshayeni (beat him with shots at
goals). He saved everything!” Sono added: “He has done well because people were
saying he is short. We are happy for him. The boy is professional and trains
hard. Avril Phali is helping him a lot because he has experience.”
Moroka Swallows have
signed Namibian forward Rudolf Bester on a season-long deal following on the non-renewal
of his contract at Free State Stars. Bester spent the past season at Stars
but battled for game-time, starting just a single match (plus eight substitute
appearances) before being allowed to leave at the end of the campaign. Swallows
boss Leon Prins confirmed the signing of Bester, who joins former Kaizer Chiefs
midfielder Josta Dladla in the list of new arrivals at the club. Bester (32)
has also previously played for Golden Arrows, Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg
United, where he briefly trained last month in his bid to win a new contract
after the disappointment of last season.
Former Swallows
defender Rudi Isaacs will be turning out for Highlands Park this season after
penning a deal with the First Division club. The former youth international
spent the past four years at Swallows after joining in from Vasco da Gama. Also
joining Highlands is youth international forward Cyprian Nkambule – on loan
from BidVest Wits – along with Namibian midfielder Peter Shalulile.
Larry Cohen has signed a one-year contract with Ajax Cape
Town.The 27-year-old former
Moroka Swallows and Chippa United
defender says he is glad to be back in Cape Town. “Yeah, I’m very grateful for
this opportunity Ajax has presented me,” the defender said. “Ajax have
world-class facilities and I hope I can add some value.” Cohen is a very versatile player and gives
Ajax coach Roger de Sa plenty more options in his squad.
Royal Eagles coach Vladislav Heric is
excited about the signing of former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela. The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs player
has signed a one-year deal with Eagles together with former Orlando Pirates
midfielder Khethokwakhe Masuku. “I am happy about the signing of Katlego
Mphela. He is one of the best strikers in the country. I am also happy about
the signing of Masuku. I worked with him at Black Leopards. I have no doubt
that he will add value to the team,” he said.
Ajax Amsterdam have
changed their mind and will now not be allowing Thulani Serero to leave the
club in this transfer window. A glut of midfield signings since the end of
last season had seen Serero, currently working his way back from an ankle
injury, slip down the pecking order. That had led to the club being open to
offers, including a loan move, but coach Frank de Boer has since announced that
they will be keeping the Bafana Bafana midfielder. This follows the loan of
Lucas Andersen to Willem II, which De Boer says means they cannot afford to
lose Serero as well. “Serero is the fifth midfielder now,” De Boer said.
“Andersen will gain experience and we will maintain Serero. That’s the ideal
scenario.”
Angelo Tsichlas,
husband of former Mamelodi Sundowns supremo Nastasia Tsichlas has been
appointed as chief technical advisor to the club and its owner, Patrice
Motsepe. Save for a short stint on the bench in the 1980s, Tsichlas has
scant coaching background, although, alongside his wife, he helped steer the
club to a record three successive Premier Soccer League titles at the turn of
the century. Tsichlas worked for the club since 1988 and rose to the position
of chairman while Nastasia was MD under the ownership of the Krok twins. He
remained on the board briefly after Motsepe’s takeover in 2004. He is the
brother-in-law of former Chippa United team manager, Peter Koutroulis, who
along with his wife Maria (sister of Nastasia) also worked for Sundowns.
Maritzburg United
have confirmed the acquisition of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Siyabulela Shai
on a season-long loan deal. The son of Sundowns legend Isaac Shai spent the
past season on loan at Chippa United where he started 12 games and made another
five substitute appearances, enjoying his best form at the tail end of the
campaign when he started the last seven League games.
SuperSport United
have loaned out the youthful duo of striker Thabani Mthembu and defender
Brandon Dean to NFD club Santos. Both players will be with the Cape Town
club on season-long loan deals. Former South Africa Under-20 star Mthembu spent
the second half of last season on loan at Vasco da Gama and has now been moved
out again as it had become clear that he would again struggle for game-time if
he stayed at SuperSport. Prior to his loan move to Vasco last season the
21-year-old had made just a single substitute appearance at SuperSport, coming
on from the bench in the club’s first League game of last season. Dean started
two games last season for Matsatsantsa and has moved back to his hometown.
MultiChoice together
with the Premier Soccer League announced season two of the MultiChoice Diski
Challenge, which will kick off with a festival weekend at the Makhulong Stadium
in Tembisa, Gauteng on Saturday, 5 September 2015. The MultiChoice Diski
Challenge is a Corporate Investment (CSI) programme which includes a reserve
league of all 16 clubs playing in the Premier Division, life skills and
leadership development for players, live coverage of the matches produced by
interns, scholarships for players and production interns, as well as free
broadcast rights of the matches by community television channels on DStv. Imtiaz
Patel. The groundbreaking initiative is a three-year partnership with the PSL
with the focus on building the PSL’s Reserve League in order to fast track the
clubs’ under 23 players into their first teams. Teams are also allowed to field
a maximum of three players over the age of 23 in their starting XI. The new
format will be a 16-team league with each club playing every other club once.
The club with the most points (that is, the team at the top of the log table)
at the end of the tournament’s match day 15, will become the champions of
MultiChoice Diski Challenge season 2. Live matches of the MultiChoice Diski
Challenge will be broadcast primarily on SuperSport Select (DStv channel 210)
and SuperSport 4 HD (DStv channel 204), depending on channel schedule.
It looks increasingly
likely that Mamelodi Sundowns will finally cash in on Nyasha Mushekwi amid
growing interest in the Zimbabwean striker. Mushekwi is currently on loan
at Swedish Allsvenskan club Djurgadens IF, where he has scored 12 goals in 18
starts. The 28 year-old’s loan deal there expires at the end of the Swedish
season in October, but a string of clubs from Asia, Europe and Africa have
already shown interest to sign him permanently. Sundowns apparently have a
transfer fee in mind and will go to bed with whichever club meets their
demands, provided Mushekwi is also happy to join that club which will
definitely be non-South African. Mushekwi has spent the last two years away on
loan at KV Oostende in Belgium and now at Djurgadens, but Sundowns feel now is
the best time to cash in on him due to his good form in Sweden, which has
increased his value. Sundowns have been receiving offers which they are
weighing up, but the player has also made it known that he will not be bullied
into joining any club. Though Mushekwi’s priority is to remain in Europe, the
better offers have come in from non-European clubs. “Nyasha is aware that the
next contract has to be the best of his career to date and so in as much as it
should be in a recognised league, it must also make financial sense to him,”
says a source. “Sundowns are at a stage where they will take the deal that
makes financial sense to them, but Nyasha also has his interests at stake and
wouldn’t want to take a risk of going to a country in the middle of a desert
with no guarantees that he will get what he is promised.” Egyptian champions
Zamalek have been mentioned in recent weeks as a potential destination after
reportedly tabling an offer to Sundowns, but his heart is on eventually moving
to England – though the requirements of acquiring a work permit there could
prove a stumbling block.
Veteran midfielder
Esrom Nyandoro is waiting for clarity from Mamelodi Sundowns regarding his
future at the club. Nyandoro, who gave 11 years of service to Sundowns, is
training on his own after his contract was not renewed at the end of last
season. The 35-year-old says he was initially offered a job by the Brazilians
but the position is yet to be finalised.
Orlando Pirates have
handed midfielder Lwazi Skosana his clearance. Skosana is now training with
Africa Sport Youth Academy under the watchful eye of Mamelodi Sundowns legend
Harold ‘Jazzy Queen’ Legodi. Pirates loaned Skosana to Polokwane City last
season but the player failed to make an impact at Rise and Shine. Bucs signed
Skosana in January 2014.
Togolese defender
Sadate Ouro Akoriko has joined Saudi outfit Al Faisaly FC from AmaZulu. Akoriko,
who completed the move after having a medical last Friday, wished Usuthu well on
their bid for a swift return to the Premier Soccer League. “I believe in all
the players in the team, I think they can perform well and bring the team back
into the PSL,” Ouro Akoriko told the club’s website. He added: “I know the
senior players like Robyn [Johannes], Marc [van Heerden], Ayanda [Dlamini],
‘Deco’ [Goodman Dlamini] and Energy [Murambadoro] can push these young boys in
the team to work hard.” The ex-Free State Stars man scored two goals in 23
starts in all competitions in 2014/15.
Ajax Cape Town
striker Prince Nxumalo has regained consciousness and is in a stable condition
in intensive care after suffering from an epilepsy attack. The 25-year-old was
transferred to the general ward of Milpark Netcare Hospital on Monday, and is
expected to be discharged soon. Prince was set to start in Sunday afternoon’s
MTN8 semi-final with Bidvest Wits in Johannesburg, but had to be rushed to
hospital in the early hours of the morning.
Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the signing of Chippa
United striker Edward Manqele on a three-year deal.“We would like
to welcome new Glamour Boy Edward Manqele on a three-year deal. Welcome to the
Amakhosi Family #KCExcel,” the club tweeted from their official account. Coach
Steve Komphela has faith that Manqele will prove his worth at Naturena. Komphela previously worked with the striker
at Free State Stars. “Of course, I know him very well when we worked together
at Free State Stars,” Komphela said on the club’s website. Our technical
team thoroughly checked Manqele’s performance in Chippa United’s 4-0 win over
Tuks. He played very well and gave a fine performance. That shows that he’s
ready, especially considering his declaration after having signed: ‘I am
home’.”
