On Thursday night, the news broke that Kermit Erasmus has parted ways with French side, Rennes.
This came after the club and player mutually agreed that his contract be terminated. Since leaving Mzansi as a star, the former Orlando Pirates striker has failed to make his name abroad.
He managed to find the back of the net just once in two years playing in France, while also creating just one assist for a teammate as well – and this wasn’t even in the top tier of French football.
Amazing how form like that got him into the national team, but that’s a topic for another day. We surely can’t doubt Erasmus’ talent – I mean the guy made Thamsanqa Gabuza look good at Pirates – but the big question is: where to now for the 27-year-old attacker?
It’s no secret that clubs in South Africa love a good free agent, but where he would fit in would be another key factor.
From all the top sides in the country, a move back to Pirates would make perfect sense, given their recent struggles in attack – plus they would have a tried and tested partnership in him and Gabuza, but there is also Justin Shonga in the picture.
It seemed likely that Erasmus will stay in Europe because of his agent, Rob Moore, who has tons of connections overseas. However, this morning, we have been told that Mamelodi Sundowns have already asked about him.
Erasmus would bring some experience in CAF competitions with him, playing an integral part in Pirates’ Confederation Cup run in 2015, where he helped the Sea Robbers reach the final before completing his move to Rennes the following year (January 2016).
Although the deadline was the 31st of January to submit squads into the CAF Champions League, so should Sundowns show more interest in the player, he wouldn’t be able to help them in the tournament.
Whatever happens, Erasmus has to find a club where he can finally settle and live up to expectations.
