Chippa United and Nigerian international goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will be the only player from the PSL involved in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Akpeyi was on Sunday named by Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr in the final 23-man squad which will do duty in Group D in Russia, which also included Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
The other two custodians in the west African nation’s World Cup squad are Francis Uzoho of Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, who plays for Nigerian giants Enyimba.
“CUFC shot-stopper, Daniel Akpeyi, has been named in the Official 23-man World Cup Squad. He is the only PSL player participating in the 2018 World Cup. #RussiaWorldCup #PrideOfTheEasternCape,” the Chilli Boys tweeted.
Akpeyi has been with Chippa for the last three seasons, playing 23 league games last season and 74 in total.
The 31-year-old made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 – in a friendly against South Africa in which he saved a penalty, and has featured in seven matches in total for the Super Eagles, including one World Cup qualifying game.
