Orlando Pirates have confirmed that assistant coach Benson Mhlongo has been released to take over the role as coach of National First Division newcomers TS Sporting.
Since retiring from playing in 2016, Mhlongo has worked with coaches such as Muhsin Ertugral, Kjell Jonevret as well as current man in charge, Milutin Sredojevic.
However, having gained some experience in guiding Pirates’ MultiChoice Diski Challenge team and working as an assistant in the first team, the 37-year-year-old former Bafana Bafana defender is ready for a new challenge with Sporting in Mpumalanga.
As such, Bucs’ official website wished him well in his future endeavours, saying: “Benson Mhlongo has received the chairman Dr Irvin Khoza’s blessings to leave the club and pursue his dream of becoming a head coach.
“Dr Khoza granted Mhlongo’s wish to leave the club following a meeting with chairman of TS Sporting Slungu Thobela earlier this week.
“Mhlongo leaves the club having amassed a wealth of knowledge where he was exposed to three different head coaches at the club, including a stint as head coach of the Orlando Pirates Multichoice Diski Challenge team.
“On behalf of the Orlando Pirates family, we would like to wish Benson the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
