MTN8 Final: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium will host the 2013 MTN8 Final on September 28.

The winner of the Orlando Pirates/Kaizer Chiefs semi-final will have home ground advantage in the match.

Benfits of home advantage include, among others, kit/colour choice and first choice of dressing-room and training facilities.

“The process for choosing a venue for the MTN8 Final is done in consultation with the teams,” PSL general manager of football Derek Blanckensee said. “We ask the clubs to choose their top three venues if the choice was solely down to them.

“With all those factors considered we decided on Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban as the venue for the MTN8 Final.”

PSL football manager Derek Blanckensee explained in another interview why the PSL decided to use Moses Mabhida.

The Durban venue has hosted a number of cup finals in the past few years, leaving many fans wondering why Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Polokwane are being ignored, despite owning world class stadiums.

Blackensee explains why Cape Town was not considered:

“We did ask a number of different stadiums to put in a bid for the final and Cape Town were not able to submit in time. “I think they needed to consult a mayoral committee or something like that and basically they didn’t come back to us in time to be considered.”

Blackensee says the PSL had the option to take the game to Mbombela Stadium but it was already booked.

He did not mention why Port Elizabeth was not considered.

“PE was one of the stadiums that was considered, they did make a bid. Mbombela Stadium also, but unfortunately we asked them and they have another event which was pre-booked a long time ago.

“Peter Mokaba is an alternative home ground for Chiefs, which gives you a neutrality issue, but we did consider a number of stadiums.”
