The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has parted ways with national team coach Michael Nees following a string of poor results in the World Cup qualifiers.
ZIFA confirmed the German coach’s dismissal in an official statement released this week, ending a tenure that produced more frustration than progress.
“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Michael Nees with immediate effect,” read the statement released by the association across their social media platforms.
“The Association sincerely thanks Mr Nees for his efforts and contributions to Zimbabwean football during his tenure. His dedication and professionalism are appreciated.”
Despite the diplomatic tone, Nees’s sacking comes as no surprise. The 58-year-old’s record was underwhelming — failing to win any of Zimbabwe’s 10 Group C matches in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Warriors managed just five draws and five defeats, leaving supporters deeply frustrated by the team’s lack of direction and identity.
Since taking charge last year, Nees has won only two of 16 games, both against Namibia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. His reign has been marked by inconsistency, tactical confusion, and an inability to inspire results on the international stage.
ZIFA has promised to announce an interim technical team soon as it seeks to reset the Warriors’ trajectory.
“Further details regarding the transition process and interim technical arrangements will be communicated in due course,” the association said.
