Yusuf Maart believes that Kaizer Chiefs can overcome Mamelodi Sundowns in Saturday’s Betway Premiership clash, provided they show a strong mentality.
While Sundowns are sitting pretty at the top of the league standings with 51 points, Amakhosi are further down the table in eighth place with 25 points.
Chiefs though have seen an upturn in fortunes in recent weeks, beating Stellenbosch as well as Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup, although they most recently lost 4-1 to SuperSport United last time out.
Sundowns, meanwhile, defeated Sekhukhune United 4-2, on Wednesday, as they show no signs of letting up in their chase for an eighth successive top-flight title.
But Maart is eyeing a positive result against the Brazilians. The Amakhosi captain said on Goal: “It’s possible to beat Sundowns.
“We are also a big team, so we must take that mentality into the game on Saturday. We create a lot of chances and that shows that we’re not playing badly, so we are really confident that we can get something on Saturday.
“In football there are no favours at all. We are playing for our own objectives as we are running our own race. We need points for ourselves at the end of the day, so we can’t be thinking about other teams.”
Chiefs last beat Sundowns in April 2021. This season, Sundowns have already defeated Nasreddine Nabi’s side twice; 2-1 in the league and 4-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals.
