With Arsenal’s love for Germans and the news of Borussia Dortmund sacking Thomas Tuchel on the same day as Arsene Wenger’s board meeting, many thought there’s something there. However, it was nothing more than coincidence.
It’s official; Wenger will remain at the Emirates for another two years. The question is, does the long-serving Frenchman deserve a new contract?
Wenger, 67, has been manager of Arsenal for 21 years, winning three Premier league titles and seven FA Cup trophies. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest managers ever to grace the game; however, many feel that the game has passed him by. Some of the most loyal Wenger fans have lost their patience. Even former Arsenal captain Tony Adams told the Guardian on Monday: “I hope he calls it a day.”
A fifth-place finish and FA Cup triumph was not enough for then-Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal to keep his job in the 2015/16 season, but for Wenger, he’s been given a two-year deal – despite missing out on the lucrative Champions League.
Wenger has achieved a lot at Arsenal, including an extraordinary unbeaten season in 2003/04. However, he hasn’t managed to win the league since, finishing runners-up twice in the last 13 seasons. And in Europe, the Gunners have failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League since the 2009-10 campaign.
All Wenger has to show for the last decade is a couple of FA Cup final wins, which is not good enough for a club like Arsenal. But since he’s staying, he must repay the faith shown in him and turn things around.
