Vusumuzi Vilakazi: AmaZulu in the market for a striker

AmaZulu co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi is eyeing a striker signing to beef up his side’s attack during the January transfer window.

The Betway Premiership club endured a difficult start to their 2024/25 campaign with three straight losses that led to the resignation of former head coach Pablo Franco Martin.

Usuthu have continued to find results hard to come by under Vilakazi and fellow co-coach Arthur Zwane but have managed to secure three wins from their six games in charge.

With just seven goals in their last five matches, Usuthu is eager to add to a squad that is starting to find its feet.

On-loan Sundowns forward Etiosa Ighodaro has been the club’s preferred target man but was unable to play against his parent club, in their recent 1-0 defeat, where Tshepang Moremi was forced to occupy a more central role in the absence of another in-form striker.

Speaking after the match, Vilakazi said on IOL: “It’s a worrying department. We tried Tshepang as a striker because we felt he had the appetite to exploit space, but we are still looking for a striker.

“Even in our next game, Ighodaro will be available, but we can’t rely on one person Junior (Dion) is having a rough time at the moment, but we’ll try our best to help him bounce and see what is going to happen.

“We still have Mbhobho (Senzo Ndlovu) as well but he’s still dealing with a case of adaptation because he was playing in the ABC Motsepe and jumped straight into the topflight, so we need to re-align him and make sure he understands the demands of this level.”

AmaZulu plays Cape Town City in their final game of the year, on Saturday.
