Vilakazi hopes for early return from injury for Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi has hinted he is hopeful of returning from injury this season despite suffering with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Vilakazi suffered the injury blow while on international duty with Bafana Bafana in the lead up to the back-to-back matches against Seychelles in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The player underwent surgery in October and has since been confined to a moon boot and crutches.

The 28-year-old has reportedly started rehabilitation and is optimistic he can return in 2018/19 despite estimates suggesting he will be out for the rest of the season.

Speaking at the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge on Tuesday, he said: “Day by day there’s progress, so I take it a day at the time.

“The little you do at rehab makes a difference. Maybe the earliest can be next month. Nobody knows.

“You can’t do anything [from the sidelines]. You just have to focus on what you can do.

“The only thing I can do is focus on my recovery, so I can’t do anything in influencing how my team performs. They are a huge motivation when I am watching them.
