Vusi Vilakazi
Vusi Vilakazi might not be the favorite for the role, but he is certainly a serious contender. The former AmaZulu FC co-coach has earned respect for his ability to turn the tide for struggling teams. Along with Arthur Zwane, Vilakazi played a key role in reviving AmaZulu’s fortunes, but the question remains: Has he done enough to prove himself as the sole head coach at a PSL outfit?
Vilakazi’s coaching journey has seen him move between various clubs. He had a brief three-month stint as head coach of Golden Arrows before transitioning to Chippa United as a Technical Director—a role that lasted only four months. Prior to joining AmaZulu, Vilakazi was Head Coach at Richards Bay, where he was instrumental in saving the club from relegation. Despite his success, he was let go before the start of the 2024/25 season.
Vilakazi’s time at AmaZulu saw him eventually promoted to co-head coach alongside Zwane. However, his recent resignation could position him as a prime candidate for a new challenge with Sekhukhune.
Morena Ramoreboli
Morena Ramoreboli may be a relatively fresh name in South African football, but his coaching pedigree goes back many years. His big break came in 2013 when he masterminded a historic 4-1 victory for Maluti FET College over Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup, a result that turned heads and showcased his tactical brilliance. Despite that early success, opportunities in domestic football remained limited, prompting him to seek challenges abroad.
Ramoreboli’s time in Botswana, where he managed Jwaneng Galaxy, was nothing short of transformative. He turned the club into a formidable force, leading them to back-to-back league titles and pushing them to the CAF Champions League group stages twice. His stunning victory over Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League qualifiers was another example of his ability to perform on the continental stage.
Under his leadership, Jwaneng Galaxy also triumphed in the Orange FA Cup. On the international stage, Ramoreboli guided Bafana Bafana to victory in the 2021 COSAFA Cup, further cementing his reputation as a highly successful coach.
Given Sekhukhune United’s need for a tactician who can deliver results swiftly, Ramoreboli’s consistent track record of success makes him a compelling candidate for the role.
Eric Tinkler
Former Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has been heavily linked to the position at Sekhukhune United, even before it became vacant. The 1996 AFCON winner has experience at the helm of a big club, having coached Orlando Pirates from 2016 to 2017. During his time at the club, he led them to two major cup finals—the CAF Confederation Cup and the Nedbank Cup—though he unfortunately fell short in both.
After leaving Pirates, Tinkler’s coaching career continued to flourish. He won the Telkom Knockout in his first stint with Cape Town City before going on to secure the MTN8 trophy with SuperSport United. Tinkler’s time with Cape Town City has been marked by consistent competitive performances, despite the club not having the same resources as South Africa’s “big three”.
