Cape Town City coach, Muhsin Ertugral, has officially confirmed that Thulani Serero will be joining the club, though the 34-year-old midfielder may only be available for their upcoming match against AmaZulu next month.
Serero, who has been training with the Citizens for some time, is available as a free agent after spending the last five years playing football in Qatar.
The South African international has been absent from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for 14 years, with his last domestic appearance coming before his high-profile move to Europe, where he played for Ajax Amsterdam.
His return to the PSL has been highly anticipated, and his arrival at City is seen as a major boost for the club. City are currently sitting 10th in the league standings following a 2-0 home defeat to Chippa United on Tuesday.
This loss marks their ninth defeat in 18 league matches, which has left the team struggling for form. When asked about Serero’s signing, Ertugral did not hesitate to confirm that the player will indeed be joining the club. However, he also clarified that Serero will not be available for their next match against Orlando Pirates.
The Turkish mentor said: “He is going back to Emirates, quick as possible but ja, he is a solution for us definitely, but not against Pirates.
“So, he needs to get his family sorted out, bring them back. Then probably, he is going to Emirates tomorrow and come back on the weekend, and then obviously the next game against AmaZulu, probably ready.”
With Serero’s arrival expected to add depth and quality to the midfield, the club and fans alike will be hoping that his return to the PSL marks a turning point in City’s fortunes for the remainder of the season.
