The highly rated 21-year-old continued to impress in the opening round of the new Betway Premiership, with one goal and three assists in 17 games in all competitions.

He made two appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, first as a substitute in the 1-0 Group B loss to Egypt and was a starter as Bafana lost to Cameroon in the 2-1 last 16 defeat.

Mokwena and supporters of his Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 side are both fans of the young South African, but admits it won’t be easy to sign him.

Speaking to Karabo Selebalo Phasha, Mokwena revealed: “I know the fans want Mofokeng. I know this, and believe me, I want Mofokeng as well.

“He’s a South African player that I speak to also about certain things in South African football but it is not a transfer – not just from a financial perspective – because I can tell you the player has had many, many offers and has set his sights on going to Europe.

“So I can talk about it because it’s just as an example that the club is ambitious. The club has explored that possibility, but the player has no ambitions to play in Africa. So it’s not a lack of ambition from the president.”

Mokwena’s side are currently top of the Ligue 1 standings with 35 points from 14 matches, ahead of second-placed CR Belouizdad by 11 points.
