TRANSFER NEWS: Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula joins Belgian club

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula has joined Belgian First Division B log leaders KV Kortrijk on loan from MLS club Toronto FC.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, featuring for them in 36 matches, providing seven assists and scoring seven times including a goal at the 2025 Club World Cup against Al Ain.

The Belgian side announced his signing with a statement on the club website on Monday, confirming that the South African will join the European team on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy permanently.

“Mailula is an offensive player who can play in multiple positions. He played at the FIFA Club World Cup this summer, where he also scored,” said KV Kortrijk Sporting Director Nils Vanneste.

The former PSL Young Player of the Season will be hoping to emulate another former Masandawana star Percy Tau, whose successful stint in Belgium earned him a move to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

His move may also improve his chances of another call up to Bafana Bafana by Belgian head coach Hugo Broos, ahead of a potential 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign next year.
