Durban-based club AmaZulu FC has expressed a strong desire to extend the contract of former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.
After his contract with Masandawana expired, the seasoned midfielder found himself without a club.
He had played a significant role for the reigning South African champions in the 2023/24 season, featuring in a total of 30 matches across all competitions.
Prior to joining AmaZulu, there were reports that Zungu was training with former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena at Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca ahead of the current campaign. However, a move to the North African giants never materialized.

Ultimately, Zungu signed a deal with AmaZulu during the mid-season transfer window, committing to the club until the end of the current season. Indeed, Zungu himself has confirmed the club’s interest in keeping him in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Despite AmaZulu’s clear interest in retaining his services, Zungu has indicated that he wishes to return home and consult with his family before making a definitive decision about his future. At the tender age of thirty-two, this suggests a careful and considered approach to his next career move.
AmaZulu experienced a challenging start to the 2024/25 season but managed to finish a respectable sixth in the Betway Premiership standings.
In a show of stability and commitment, AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu publicly affirmed that Arthur Zwane would remain as the club’s head coach beyond this season.
The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor took over the reins from Spaniard Pablo Franco Martin during the season, and his continuity is seen as a key factor in the club’s future plans.
Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign, Usuthu are set to face off against Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 quarter-finals, with the match scheduled to be played away from home.
This will be an early test of their ambitions for the new season and their ongoing quest for silverware.
