Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams is eager to make his mark in front of a home crowd when they face Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Gqeberha on Saturday.
The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, who hails from the city’s Gelvandale township, hasn’t played for Bafana in Gqeberha since 2019. He’s excited to lead the team in his hometown and hopes to inspire a victory.
Speaking on Umhlobo Wenene’s BEE Breakfast Show with Mluleki Ntsabo on Wednesday, Williams relishes leading the team in front of his home crowd.
“Yeah, amazing feeling, it’s always good to be home. This is where everything started for me, once I had a dream a few years ago and I’ve lived my dream. So, I’m just glad that I’m leading the team now in front of my family, my friends, people that’s been on the journey with me so I’m just excited for the game,” Williams said.
Bafana and Congo last faced off in the same group in 2014, with the late Senzo Meyiwa playing a key role in South Africa’s success. Williams echoes coach Hugo Broos’s call for a six-point haul from their two-match series against Congo.
“Yes, we do, we’ve got a good analyst department, run by Sinesipho Mali so he’s done a good job of putting clips together to give us an idea as to how they play. I mean football is worldwide now and it’s just a click of the button to get any video footage of teams so we’re privileged now,” he added.
“We’ve seen them, we’ve studied them and we’ve analysed them as well so it’s gonna be tough, we are looking forward to it but yes, the outcome for this camp is six out of six and we believe it’s possible.”
