The Nigeria national team experienced a significant disruption in their travel plans ahead of their final crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier after their aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Angola on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly after the team’s plane took off from a refuelling stop in Luanda, Angola. Approximately 25 minutes into the flight, the crew had to divert and return to Luanda after a heavy crack reportedly appeared on the windshield.

Fortunately, all players and staff members disembarked safely in the Angolan capital following the unscheduled landing.
The team was then left waiting for Nigerian government officials to coordinate arrangements for a replacement aircraft to be flown from Lagos to collect the squad and transport them to Uyo, Nigeria, where the match will be held.
High-Stakes Finale for World Cup Qualification
The travel drama precedes a momentous final matchday for Group C of the African qualifiers, where the race for a single automatic spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup (in Canada, Mexico, and the United States) has reached fever pitch.
The Super Eagles are currently in third position in the group, following their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday. They are set to host the current group leaders, Benin, led by coach Eric Chelle, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.
South Africa’s Precarious Path
The qualification landscape was dramatically altered when Bafana Bafana suffered a major blow after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by 10-man Zimbabwe in Durban.
This result means Bafana Bafana’s dream of direct qualification now hangs by a thin thread, contingent on two specific outcomes:
Bafana Bafana MUST WIN their home game against Rwanda on Tuesday, which would take their points tally to 18.
Nigeria MUST DEFEAT Benin in their simultaneous showdown in Uyo.
With only the group winner assured a place at the finals, the fact that these crucial games are kicking off at the same time is a deliberate measure by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ensure fair play and eliminate any chance of gamesmanship in this high-stakes finale.
The pressure is now immense on both the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana to deliver.
