Stellenbosch edge Golden Arrows in a seven-goal thriller

Stellenbosch secured a hard-fought victory over Golden Arrows in a thrilling seven-goal Betway Premiership encounter on Wednesday at Athlone Stadium.

Stellies took the lead through Langelihle Phili in the 14th after a counter-attack that had followed a miss from Golden Arrows’ Nhlanhla Zwane just a minute earlier.

Both teams continued their frenzied counter-attacking football with Arrows drawing level in the 43rd minute through the impressive Siyanda Mthanti to take the match to half-time at 1-1.

Andre de Jong rose high to put the home side in the lead four minutes into the second half before Sede Dion levelled the score in the 54th minute.

Misses from both sides followed before de Jong netted his second of the match in the 61st minute; however, Arrows persisted in attack and found a third equaliser through Isaac Cisse after a Mthanti cross.

Stellenbosch had the last laugh when substitute Muzomuhle Khanyi slotted in the winner in the 76th minute to seal the three points, moving Stellies up to 13th with Abafana Bes’thende remaining in ninth spot.

Steve Barker’s side is next in action on Saturday against FC 15 de Agosto in the CAF Confederations Cup.
