United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had earlier saved well from Hugo Bueno and was again called into action after the interval, parrying a low shot from Krejci and clearing the danger with Yerson Mosquera closing in.

Mosquera was involved at the other end too, nearly turning the ball into his own net, only for Jose Sa to recover and prevent the header crossing the line.

Sa was later penalised by referee Thomas Bramall for holding the ball longer than eight seconds, only the third time the rule has been applied this season, though the resulting corner came to nothing.

Jhon Arias went close for Wolves with a deflected effort, while Patrick Dorgu thought he had won it late on for United, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check. United were booed off at full-time, with the draw leaving them sixth

“We struggled throughout all the game,” Amorim said. “We had a lack of creation, but we already knew it would be a different game to Newcastle [United]. We had a different energy during the game.

“Looking at the 90 minutes, we had our chances, but the fluidity offensively wasn’t there. There is a lack of connections at the moment.

“We needed more imagination to create chances. We struggled in the first half trying to steal the ball. They put a lot of men in the midfield. We tried, but the quality was not there.
