Royal AM is scheduled to hold a press briefing, where the club is expected to provide an update on their return to action following their suspension by the PSL.
The KwaZulu-Natal-based club was recently seized by SARS over an outstanding R40 million tax debt, while FIFA ordered them to pay R15 million to former striker Samir Nurkovic.
Despite the turmoil, Royal AM’s general manager Richard Makhoba remains optimistic that the team will soon be back on the pitch. He confirmed to The Witness that efforts to resolve the club’s financial troubles are progressing, with an official announcement expected during a press conference this week.
“For now, let’s leave it there and please wait for the official announcement, which will be made during the press briefing in two days’ time,” Makhoba stated.
The Harry Gwala Stadium-based outfit’s potential return has sparked hope among fans that they will complete the season in the elite league. However, Makhoba refrained from revealing specific details regarding their immediate league commitments.
“Let’s all leave it for the official announcement in a few days,” he added when pressed about the status of their Betway Premiership fixtures, which had been suspended indefinitely by the PSL.
Despite the uncertainty, Royal AM players and technical staff have continued training as usual and are expected to receive an update from management before the end of the week.
The regional executive officer of SAFA uMgungundlovu, Makhetha Mzimela, stressed the club’s importance to Pietermaritzburg football, expressing hope for a positive resolution.
“Losing Royal AM would be a big blow for local soccer. Their players serve as role models to young footballers, many of whom look up to them,” Mzimela said.
The PSL recently confirmed that Royal AM failed to provide financial guarantees to meet their fixture commitments under the club’s current curatorship, leading to the suspension of all their league and cup games.
With Royal AM set to break their silence soon, all eyes will be on the official press briefing as South African football fans await clarity on the club’s future.
