It’s been a difficult season for Gavin Hunt and his SuperSport United side, as they endured their fourth consecutive league defeat.
With only four wins from 16 Betway Premiership matches, they’ve lost half of their games and are struggling at both ends of the pitch, having scored just six goals – the fewest from all topflight clubs.
Hunt expressed his frustration after discovering that on-loan midfielder Lebohang Maboe would be ineligible to play in the Tshwane Derby against Sundowns. This news came just before Masandawana’s dominant 3-0 victory over SuperSport United on Wednesday evening.
Maboe, who joined SuperSport on loan from Sundowns during the transfer window, was subject to a clause in the agreement that prevents him from facing his parent club. However, Hunt revealed that he was unaware of this restriction until the last minute and voiced his disappointment, noting that Maboe could have made a significant impact on the match.
“I work on the green grass. He [Maboe] just came in, and it’s disappointing because I think he adds value to us. But agreements were made somewhere, and I don’t know anything about it,” Hunt told SuperSport.com.
“I was just told he can’t play, which is a big blow because he’s a quality player. We saw against AmaZulu, when he came on for 30 minutes, he gave us a different dimension. So, it’s disappointing.”
Hunt also voiced his frustration with the challenges of not being able to field a consistent lineup week after week, especially in comparison to other teams in the league.
“I look at some teams, and they play the same XI every week. If you can tell me my starting XI for Wednesday, I’d be a lucky man. It’s a bit difficult.”
Currently sitting in 12th place with just 16 points from 16 games, SuperSport United face a tough challenge this weekend as they take on top-four side Sekhukhune United. Kickoff is scheduled for 15:30 on Sunday, 9 February.
