Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has heaped praise on the club’s rising stars, particularly 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi, after his solid debut performance in the team’s 1-0 victory over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday.
The match, played in Gqeberha, saw the Buccaneers claim all three points thanks to a header from Nkosinathi Sibisi.
With the win, Pirates maintained their position in second place on the league table with 39 points from 17 matches, keeping the pressure on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who dropped points in their match against Golden Arrows.

Mbokazi, who had been making waves with his performances in the DDC league, was handed a start in the crucial match against Chippa United.
The young defender impressed by playing the full 90 minutes, helping to secure a clean sheet for the team. Not only did he contribute defensively, but he also had a go at goal, showing his attacking potential and composure on the ball.
After the match, Riveiro was quick to acknowledge the efforts of the young players, singling out Mbokazi for his debut performance.
He also highlighted Siyabonga Ndlozi as another example of the emerging talent in the squad. Riveiro emphasized that the performances of these youngsters showcase the depth and quality within the team.
“I think they did a good job,” he told SuperSport TV during his post-match interview.
“Like I said many times we have a lot of talent in the squad. When you see players on the bench or on the field is because they are ready.
The Pirates coach also reflected on the significance of having such young players step up in important matches. “Young boys, 22, 19 years old playing the first time in PSL in an important game for the team, for the club under pressure.
“I think what they delivered tonight on the field is something to give a lot of value and to be happy as a club.”
With the victory, Orlando Pirates have closed the gap to Mamelodi Sundowns from 18 to 16 points, while still having four games in hand. The result not only highlighted the club’s ambition to keep the pressure on the league leaders but also showcased the bright future of its young players.
Looking ahead, Riviero and his players now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup quarter-final, where they will face SuperSport United this weekend. Kick off at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is set for 15h00 on Saturday, 08 March.
