PSL Transfer News: “There are chances that we will sign, but let's see" - Sundowns' Miguel Cardoso Hints Strategic Reinforcements

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed the club is actively working to strengthen its squad before the close of the transfer window.

While the Brazilians have enjoyed a strong start to the Betway Premiership season, Cardoso emphasized a deliberate approach to recruitment, signaling that any new signings will be carefully selected to genuinely improve the team.

The comments come as Sundowns prepare to face Marumo Gallants later today at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium. The reigning champions, currently in second place with four wins and two draws from six matches, have a chance to put pressure on the league leaders.

Sundowns’ impressive start, which includes a convincing 3-0 win over Magesi over the weekend, follows a significant off-season where 13 players were released. Only two new players have arrived so far: Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch and Katlego Ntsabeleng on loan from FC Dallas.

Speaking ahead of the midweek clash, Cardoso stressed that the club is prioritizing quality over quantity. “There are chances that we will sign, but let’s see how many players,” he told The Citizen. “For sure, it won’t be a bunch of players, but if there’s a chance to make one or two signings in the right direction, then we will do it. If not, then we’re not going to do it.”

Cardoso highlighted the collaborative and meticulous process behind the transfer strategy. “The club has been very serious about the approach because we really want to target the right players and not just bring in numbers,” he said.

“If we just bring in numbers, they won’t help us, and we don’t want to make that mistake. We’re seriously working, and it’s me together with the sporting director, chairman, and president to bring in players that can really reinforce the group.”

Match Preview: Sundowns vs. Gallants

Sundowns will be looking to build on their recent momentum, having recovered from a goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs on August 27 that ended their perfect winning streak. Despite a compact schedule, the team has shown a strong balance of defensive solidity and attacking flair.

Their opponents, Marumo Gallants, coached by Alexandre Lafitte, have had a mixed start to their campaign. After impressive back-to-back 2-1 victories over Richards Bay and Orlando Pirates, Gallants have gone winless in their last three outings.

A loss to AmaZulu, another to Stellenbosch, and a 1-1 draw with Polokwane City on August 31 have seen them drop to eighth place on the table, tied on seven points with Golden Arrows.
