Founded in 1996, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is the trading name of the National Soccer League (NSL). It is an Affiliate Member of the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the administrator of professional football in the Republic of South Africa.
Manning Rangers were the first to be crowned champions of the PSL in 1997 when Gordon Igesund coached the side and stunned all by winning the title ahead of many more prominent opponents.
Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the league winning it a record-breaking fourteen times including seven successive wins from the 2017/18 season to 2023/24. The Brazilians were the first to win the league trophy on three consecutive occasions from 1997 to 2000.
Led by Gavin Hunt, SuperSport United shocked the South African football fraternity clinching the league for three successive seasons from 2007 to 2010.
