PSL Dream: Orbit College's Race For Promotion Gains Momentum with Substantial Government Backing

Orbit College Football Club‘s hot pursuit of promotion to the Premier Soccer League has received a significant financial injection from the North West provincial government, underscoring the region’s commitment to fostering local footballing talent.

Having already demonstrated their support by investing over R1 million this season towards the team’s development and operational expenses, the provincial government has pledged an additional R700 000 to alleviate costs for the upcoming campaign.

This substantial commitment highlights the government’s belief in Orbit College’s potential and their dedication to nurturing sporting excellence within the province.

The Mswenko Boys are currently making waves in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Their impressive performance sees them occupying the second spot on the league table with 49 points from 28 matches. They trail league leaders Durban City, who have accumulated 52 points from 27 games, setting up a thrilling finale to the season.

Crucially, Orbit College holds a comfortable five-point advantage over third-placed Casric Stars. With just two more points needed from their remaining fixtures, the team is on the cusp of securing a coveted spot in the promotion/relegation play-offs, bringing them tantalizingly close to realizing their PSL aspirations.

Shuping Sebolecwe, the spokesperson for the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, articulated the government’s unwavering support through a social media statement: “Orbit College FC have made significant strides on the national football stage, and their journey has been met with admiration and support from the North West provincial government. As a testament to this commitment, the department has already invested over R1 million into the team’s development and operations this season.

Sebolecwe further elaborated on the long-term nature of this partnership, stating, “Beyond once-off contributions, the department has also signed a memorandum of understanding that will see it cover the costs of all accommodation for both home and away matches, a commitment worth more than R700 000.

Emphasizing the broader vision behind this investment, Sebolecwe added, “This long-term support is part of a broader strategy to develop grassroots talent and elevate the profile of sport in the North West.

“Orbit College FC represents the talent and resilience of our province. Their dedication on and off the field reflects the spirit of the North West, and we are proud to walk this journey with them.

“This is our team, our pride. Let us support them in every way possible in the stands, in our communities, and through our collective encouragement.”

As their promotion bid reaches a critical juncture, Orbit College is gearing up for their penultimate league fixture against JDR Stars. The highly anticipated clash is scheduled to kick off at 15h00 on Sunday, 11 May 2025, at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium in Pretoria.
