The dispute involving Liam Bern, Cape Town Spurs, and AmaZulu will be heard by the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on Tuesday, according to Sportswire.
Bern is the third Spurs player to challenge his contract after the club’s relegation to the ABC Motsepe Regional League.
His former teammates, Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, won similar cases earlier this year when the DRC declared them free agents.
PSL regulations state that a player’s contract automatically lapses when a club drops to the amateur divisions. Spurs, however, continue to argue that their contracted players cannot move without transfer fees being paid.
Despite winning their cases, Velebayi and Baartman remain sidelined, as Spurs appealed the rulings to the South African Football Association (SAFA) Appeals Board. Their moves to Kaizer Chiefs are therefore still pending.
Bern, who was signed by AmaZulu during the off-season, is in the same position. Usuthu president Sandile Zungu has confirmed the club has not yet registered him with the PSL and is waiting for clarity from the DRC.
If the chamber rules in Bern’s favour, Spurs still have the option to appeal, potentially dragging the matter out further and delaying his AmaZulu debut.
