Orlando Pirates Latest News: Mpumi Khoza eager for league title after MTN8 success

Orlando Pirates director Mpumi Khoza says the club’s focus now shifts to the Betway Premiership following their historic fourth consecutive MTN8 title.

Speaking after the Buccaneers’ 3-0 extra-time triumph over Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, Khoza praised the players, coaching staff, and supporters for their role in the victory.

“What is most important is to thank our supporters, because they’re the 12th man who keeps us going,” Khoza told SuperSport TV.

“The team, the coaches, and the players – all of them put in the hard work. When we went on preseason, which our chairman [Irvin Khoza] initiated, it was like a shot in the dark, but he invested in it. We are thankful that it pays off in tournaments like this.”

The MTN8 win was the first for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who succeeded three-time winner Jose Riveiro, and marks Pirates’ 14th top-eight trophy overall, and their fifth in six seasons. Khoza emphasized that such achievements are part of the club’s broader mission to build on its rich history.

“I think, as our chairman has said, our job is always to improve the history of Orlando Pirates,” Khoza explained.

“The players who have come in today, including the young captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and winning a fourth title in a row, is a testament to that. It shows we’re committed to continuously improving the legacy of this club.”

Pirates now turn their attention to the league, where they aim to challenge perennial champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Khoza believes that with the team’s talent, preparation, and determination, the Buccaneers are capable of achieving even greater success this season.

“The MTN8 is just the beginning. With this squad, we are confident we can push for every trophy and continue to make our supporters proud,” he added.

Pirates are next in action in the first preliminary round of the Champions League against Lioli FC on Saturday.
