Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League opponents relish big test

Orlando Pirates face Lesotho outfit Lioli FC in a CAF Champions League preliminary round clash on Saturday.

The two sides will open their 2025/26 continental campaign on Saturday, with Lioli designated as the home team but forced to play the first leg at Toyota Stadium in the Free State due to the absence of CAF-approved facilities in Lesotho.

Maseko acknowledges the challenge of facing the Buccaneers but believes his players are mentally prepared to step up to the occasion.

“It is a big test, but one that helps us grow. We welcome this challenge to measure ourselves against the best. Playing against tough opponents forces you to raise your level technically, tactically, mentally, and physically. You come out stronger,” Maseko was quoted by Lesotho Times.

“We want to compete, not just participate. The technical team has already started preparing players mentally, with motivation, tactical clarity, and a fearless mindset.”

Pirates, meanwhile, will be grateful for the familiar surroundings. After reaching the semi-finals of last season’s competition, where they narrowly lost 3-2 on aggregate to eventual winners Pyramids FC, the Soweto giants are targeting an even deeper run this time under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The Buccaneers come into the tie fresh from winning the MTN8 for a record fourth successive season after their emphatic 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC last weekend.

That triumph not only secured Ouaddou his first trophy in charge but also provided a confidence boost as Pirates look to launch their continental campaign on the front foot.

For Lioli, champions of the Lesotho Premiership in each of the past two seasons, this encounter represents more than just a football match. It is an opportunity to showcase their progress and measure themselves against one of Africa’s most formidable clubs.
