OPINION: In signing Darwin Nunez, Liverpool evolves into the best team in the world

Charles Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection. Jurgen Klopp has seemingly tried to show a practical example of this theory, illustrating how only the fittest can truly survive. Look, my science knowledge might be skeptical – but there isn’t too much to understand about Darwin Nunez’s arrival in Liverpool.

The 22-year-old forward from Benfica, by way of Uruguayan descent, has emerged as Europe’s hottest commodity. Sadio Mane looks set to play his football elsewhere next season, and whilst I don’t think there is a link…I can’t help but jump on that proverbial bandwagon and just remind you all of the Senegalese’s departure.

Nunez had an initially humble debut season for Benfica, however after requiring knee surgery there was simply no looking back. He would go on to win the Golden Boot award in the Primera Liga. He is truly an out and out attacking striker, standing at 1.9m tall. I’m not sure that his physical ability will struggle in the Premier League.

He has been described at times as the perfect number 9, a player with pace and skill in equal measure, all held together by a powerful physique and mature mentality. Now, contrary to popular belief, I am of the belief that Klopp’s missing piece is a proven number 9. A player selected in the team to score goals and provide a threat through the middle of the field.

The Red’s missed out on the Premier League title by a solitary point in the 2021/22 season. Manchester City might still overtly seek the Champions League, but their prowess in the domestic league continues to grow. Pep Guardiola’s side have now added Erling Haaland to their squad, and you just get the feeling that is a move which might seem to point the dignity of the league toward ‘farmers league’ status.

It is a show of intent from Manchester City in the transfer market, but I believe the acquisition of Darwin Nunez is exactly what Liverpool require. They are the most exciting team in Europe now, they have incredible ability and talent in almost every area in the field.

So indeed, surely Liverpool evolves into the best team in the world? I mean Darwin said it…
