Despite establishing themselves as the modern “cup kings” of South African football, Pirates have found this particular competition difficult to conquer, with their last triumph coming back in 2011 when it was still known as the Telkom Knockout.

Sibisi admitted the team’s struggles in the tournament have been a source of frustration, but also a source of motivation.

“We know this is the cup that has eluded us for quite some time now, but we are really looking forward to playing the game on Saturday,” Sibisi said.

“We know what we are coming up against, a very good side in Marumo Gallants, but the boys are prepared for the game.

“Whenever there are changes, there is doubt. At the start of the season, we started on a back foot, and for the boys to pick up and the coach, I think it speaks volumes to the character of the group.

“And it is something we are carrying because we knew what we were doing, and we trusted the process. I think now we are reaping the rewards for that process.

“It’s only halfway through the season, but we are going to play our second final, and it shows the work the coach has been putting in, the technical team and the players as well.”

The defender, who is targeting his second trophy as captain since taking over the armband from Innocent Maela, believes the opportunity to end a 14-year drought adds extra fuel to their push for silverware.

Pirates are also eager to add the Carling Knockout to the MTN8 title they secured earlier this season.

He highlighted the growing confidence within the squad under coach Abdesslam Ouaddou, whose influence is becoming increasingly evident.

Ouaddou has guided Pirates to a second consecutive final, strengthening belief that the team is well placed to finally overcome their hoodoo in this competition.
