ABOUT NEDBANK CUP
The Nedbank Cup is South Africa’s premier knockout tournament for club football. Over the years, various formats have been implemented, but the tournament has always aimed to give lower league and amateur teams the opportunity to compete against top-tier clubs for the trophy.
Established in 1971 as the Life Challenge Cup, the tournament retained this name until 1975. It was known as the Benson and Hedges Trophy in 1976 and 1977, and then the Mainstay Cup from 1978 to 1987. In 1988, First National Bank took over sponsorship, renaming it the Bob Save Super Bowl, a title it held until 2001, although there were no tournaments in 1997 and 2002. From 2003 to 2007, the competition was sponsored by ABSA and called the ABSA Cup. Since 2008, it has been known as the Nedbank Cup.
The current format includes 16 Premiership clubs, eight teams from the National First Division (NFD), and eight amateur teams, making a total of 32 teams in the main draw. Premiership clubs automatically qualify, while NFD teams must play a single qualifier among themselves. Amateur teams go through a series of qualifiers to reach the main draw.
Starting from the round of 32, teams are not seeded, and the first teams drawn enjoy home-ground advantage. The tournament no longer features replays; if a match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time, followed by penalties if needed.
Winners receive R7 million in prize money and earn a spot in the following season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
